Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and God Bless You and your loved ones!
I have had the lovely privilege of working with missionary kid, Tori, in a Star Shooter workshop. Tori is 6yrs. old and lives in Malta. She is currently in Kansas City on furlough with her parents. During our session, we processed her emotions of being in transition as well as what she thinks and feels about living in a foreign country. Tori made the observation that America is “big” and she misses the “small shops” in Malta. Tori was more than a delight to be with and I was blown away with her creativity and passion to express herself through a camera. She caught on so quickly and was manipulating the camera like a pro (well, almost). Tori has expressed so much interest in photography, her mother said she won’t put her parent’s camera down! So, I’m asking you all… would anyone be interested in donating a digital camera to Tori? It would be considered an “in-kind” donation to Star Shooter, a 501(c)3 tax-deductible organization. If interested in donating funds for a camera click HERE, if interested in donating a camera email mail@starshooter.org or give Johnna a call 843.457.3331. Thank You! Enjoy some of Tori’s work below. Yes, another interview for Star Shooter. Check it out http://www.volunteermatch.org/nonprofits/stories/spotlight.jsp?id=46
Also, Star Shooter is undergoing some changes. Founder, Johnna Brynn Bockover, will be moving from Myrtle Beach to Kansas City in October 2009… but will leave behind a team for Star Shooter to be active in the Myrtle Beach community. Star Shooter has built positive connections in South Carolina and wants to leave these connections connected! A few local photographers have displayed interest in being an instructor for Star Shooter workshops, therefore we anticipate more SS workshops for children in S. Carolina! SS Board Member, Crystal Grainger, has volunteered to be the “Star Shooter Myrtle Beach Representative” and will be the contact person for the Myrtle Beach and surrounding areas. Another workshop at Teach My People in Pawley’s Island, SC is in the works!
This “move” to Kansas City is expanding Star Shooter’s vision by taking SS to another city! Pray that SS can touch more children in Kansas City and beyond! Thank you all for your support.
Check out our new site with t-shirts for sale! Lots of styles and colors that YOU CHOOSE. Your purchase will help more kids join our workshops!

Yes, indeed! Star Shooter is now officially a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Which means we hold a tax-exempt status! Therefore, all your donations to Star Shooter will be tax-deductible! Woohoo!
The Star Shooter Photo Contest was a complete success! Hallelujah! We received 198 photo submissions from 33 different states and 8 different countries! Discover the incredible winners HERE. And thanks to the eleven judges who did a fantastic job! (I’m glad I wasn’t a judge, it was tough stuff! So many great images!) Here is the Grand Prize Winning Photo (below)… “Hippi Steve” from Matthew Freund, an incredibly humble guy that supported this contest from the very beginning five months ago, by printing and passing out contest flyers all over Los Angeles! This shot was actually taken with a film Hasselblad camera in Topanga Canyon, CA – a small, beautiful mountainous part of Los Angeles. Check out more of Matt’s incredible work HERE.
It was really fun calling Matt on speaker phone tonight in a room full of photographer’s here in Myrtle Beach to congratulate him. And I found it especially intriguing that when I asked Matt what prize he preferred, “the camera or some cash?” …he replied “What’s the camera?” Again, I will say… this man is humble and gifted. What a great combo for success! We wish you the best, Matt!
Thank you to ALL who participated in the Star Shooter Photo Contest! Without each of you, it wouldn’t have been made possible! Subscribe to this blog (by clicking HERE) to be updated on next year’s photo contest… as I think this could most definitely be an annual thing for Star Shooter! God Bless to All!

We were just donated an awesome “Voltron Star Shooter” toy camera from a very kind gent -John- from Connecticut. Voltron’s are very difficult to get ahold of and were only produced in 1985 (in Missouri, where I’m from, thank you very much) and were short-lived. Once I discovered the Voltron, I knew Star Shooter had to adopt it for our mascot! So here he is, in all his glory…. drum roll please…. Mr. Voltron Star Shooter 1985! How cool is he?!?!! I know the kids are going to love playing with it… it takes 110 film, so I still have yet to purchase the film to try it out, but once we do, we’ll be sure to share the shots from Mr. Voltron Star Shooter! I’ll also post a stock image below of Mr. Voltron transformed into a camera. I have yet to “transform” it… as the robot-look is just too cool for school. Thanks, John from Connecticut!!! John also received a great print from one of our students as a “thank you”. If you or anyone else you know has a camera you’d like to donate, please don’t hesitate… as kids would love to use it as a tool for expression! And we’ll send you a free print from one of our students! Click HERE for more details.
